A national strategic university with close ties to the Chinese Ministry of Education, China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUP) was established in 1953. The Karamay campus is situated in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, whereas the main campus is situated in Beijing near the southern foothill of Jundu Mountain. CUP primarily concentrates on engineering disciplines while having a coordinated development in multi-disciplines, with a distinctive characteristic in petroleum. CUP joined the initial group of Project 211 institutions in China in 1997 and was chosen in 2006 to build the National Innovative Platform for Advantageous Disciplines. After being chosen to take part in the “Double First-Class” Initiative in 2017, CUP began a new path to transform into a top-tier university with Chinese features.
